A senior dog thrown away like a piece of garbage is expected to survive after he was found tied up inside a trash bag with his muzzle taped shut.
The 10-year-old Shepherd mix named Saint Vincent was rescued after a Good Samaritan saw a plastic bag moving near a trash bin by the Jackie Robinson Parkway in New York. The person could hear breathing inside the bag and immediately called New York Police Department (NYPD).
The NYPD reached out to New York Bully Crew, a dog rescue that saves many abused and neglected dogs. Veterinarians believe the dog could have been trapped inside the bag for as long as a week!
Saint Vincent held on to life despite the cruel efforts of the person who left him to die. But he was in very bad shape when he was found.
“He was bleeding from the nose, like I said, his mouth was taped up,” Carla Mohan with New York Bully Crew told WABC. “He was covered in urine. He has complete urine scalds all over his body.”
The poor dog appears to have suffered long term abuse. “This didn’t happen overnight or over the course of a couple of days, this is sustained neglect and abuse, just basically leaving him lying in his own urine and feces to the point that he’s developed massive infections,” Dr. Brett Levitzke said.
Saint Vincent was taken to Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group (VERG) where he is receiving emergency care.
There is currently a $4,500 reward being offered for anyone who can lead police to the person who threw St. Vincent in the trash. Anyone with information on Saint Vincent’s former owners or the person who may have dumped him is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
In the meantime, New York Bully Crew are taking care of Saint Vincent, and will find him a good home when he is ready. Mohan says they hope to “erase the horrific thing that just happened to him so that is not his last memory. He deserves better. He deserves more. He deserves unconditional love.”
Saint Vincent is said to be “docile and friendly” and is doing well, all things considered. He is unable to stand and will be getting an MRI soon to learn why he is cannot move his back legs.
